Pay

We adopt the following philosophy in determining compensation.

  • Base pay is determined based on realized impact, not titles. Workstream owners responsible for the success or failure of a project or team are compensated more than individual contributors. Conversely, folks at the same contribution level receive equivalent pay.
  • We make cost of living adjustments based on the worker’s location. We use the Numbeo index to arrive at a fair and equitable amount.
  • Based on your growth and progression, we review your compensation frequently and can make aggressive adjustments.

Performance Review

We do performance reviews of every team member at the end of each calendar quarter. Depending on your performance, you may be awarded a cash bonus, or a share option grant.

Cash Bonus

Cash bonus is typically awarded biannually, after the performance review in March and September every year. We take into consideration the company’s performance as well as your individual contribution in determining the bonus amount.

Equity

We want the people building Menlo to own a meaningful percentage of the company over time. It is important to us to acknowledge the contributions made by all team members, and provide everyone an opportunity to participate in the equity of the company and feel invested in our success.

Every 6 months after the performance review in June and December, we typically distribute 1% of company equity to eligible members of the team. Eligibility and the amount of equity awarded are determined based on a variety of factors including tenure and individual performance. The awards we have made so far are as follows:

  • December 2023: 1% distributed among 10 team members (1 part-time)
  • June 2024: 1% distributed among 16 team members (4 part-time)
  • December 2024: 1% distributed among 18 team members (6 part-time)

For key hires, we may also include share option awards as part of their compensation package to align their interests with the long-term success of the company.

Benefits

Besides pay and equity, we offer other benefits to all team members.

  • Equipment: As we are a remote team, we offer a budget to procure equipment that can enhance your productivity. Eligible items include a laptop, monitors, keyboard, mouse or noise-cancelling headphones. Please see our spending policy for more details.
  • Software Subscriptions: As a technology company, we like you to make the best use of software tools out there that can aid you in performing your work more efficiently. We have a budget for software subscriptions - please see our spending policy for more details.
  • Language & Presentation Skills: As many of you will be representing the company in conferences and external speaking engagements, we are committed to training you in language and public speaking skills. You can utilize a US$100 annual budget on apps such as Italki, Elsa, Cambly or tutors, classes and books.
